Your domain, step by step

Put your new website on your domain at GoDaddy

About 15 minutes. You change three settings at GoDaddy. Your domain stays where it is and your email keeps working. Your panel checks each setting for you as you make it.

You need your GoDaddy username (or customer number) and password, and your panel open in another tab so you can copy your site's address from its Domain tab. Keep your phone or email nearby: GoDaddy may send you a code before it saves a change.

The three settings

TypeNameValue
CNAMEwwwyour site's address — copy it from the Domain tab of your panel
A@137.66.50.77
AAAA@2a09:8280:1:0:0:1a0:bb93:0

@ means the domain itself; some screens call it the "host" or leave it blank. Leave every other setting exactly as it is: your email depends on them.

Step by step

  1. Sign in to GoDaddy

Go to sso.godaddy.com. Type your username (or customer number) and your password, and click Sign In.

  2. Open your domain

Go to your Domain Portfolio, the list of your domains. If you do not see it, type dcc.godaddy.com/control/portfolio into the address bar. Click your domain's name.

  4. Turn off forwarding, if it is on

Click Forwarding, next to DNS Records. If your domain is listed there, click the trash can next to it, then click Delete to confirm. If nothing is listed, there is nothing to do here. Then click DNS Records to go back to the list.

  5. Change the www record

In the list, find the line with type CNAME and name www. Click the pencil at the end of that line. In Value, delete what is there and paste your site's address from your panel. Click Save.
No www line? Click Add New Record, choose CNAME under Type, type www under Name, paste your site's address under Value, and click Save.

  6. Change the A record

Find the line with type A and name @. Its value may say Parked, WebsiteBuilder Site or show numbers. Click the pencil at the end of that line. In Value, delete what is there and type the A address from the table above. If the form shows more than one value, keep only this one. Click Save.

  7. Delete any second A record

Look down the list once more. If you see another line with type A and name @, click the trash can at the end of that line and confirm. Only one A line for @ should be left: the one you just changed.

  8. Add the AAAA record

Click Add New Record. Under Type, choose AAAA. Under Name, type @. Under Value, type the AAAA address from the table above. Click Save.
Already have an AAAA line with name @? Click its pencil and change its value instead.

  9. Check it in your panel

Go back to the Domain tab of your panel and click Check my settings again. Each setting says done once the internet sees it, often within minutes, sometimes up to an hour. We email you the moment your new site shows on your domain.

Good to know

Each change at GoDaddy has its own Save button: a change is kept only once you click it.

If GoDaddy asks for a code before it saves, that is its Domain Protection checking it is you: type the code it sent by text, email or your authenticator app.

If the pencil on the A line is grey, forwarding (step 4) or a connection to another site is locking it; for a connection, click Remove next to the site's name above your records and confirm with Yes, let's do it!

Changing these records does not cancel any website plan you pay GoDaddy for; cancel it at GoDaddy once your new site shows on your domain, if you no longer need it.

Do not change your Nameservers, or any line of type MX or TXT: those carry your email.

Stuck, or not sure?

Open the Help tab in your panel and write what you see, in your own words. We answer within minutes and walk you through it.

Changed your mind? Your panel keeps today's settings. Put them back at GoDaddy and your old website returns, usually within an hour. If you turned off a forwarding or a connection on the way, turn it back on too.
