Your domain, step by step

Customer sign-in

Put your new website on your domain at Microsoft 365

About 15 minutes. You change three settings at Microsoft 365. Your domain stays where it is and your email keeps working. Your panel checks each setting for you as you make it.

You need to sign in to Microsoft 365 as an administrator: usually the person who set up Microsoft 365 for your business (Microsoft calls this a Global Administrator or Domain Name Administrator). If an IT person looks after it for you, send them this page. Keep your panel open in another window: you copy your site's address from its Domain tab.

The three settings

TypeNameValue
CNAMEwwwyour site's address — copy it from the Domain tab of your panel
A@137.66.50.77
AAAA@2a09:8280:1:0:0:1a0:bb93:0

@ means the domain itself; some screens call it the "host" or leave it blank. Leave every other setting exactly as it is: your email depends on them.

Step by step

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center

Go to admin.microsoft.com. Sign in with the work email and password you use for Microsoft 365, the way you usually do. If Microsoft asks you to approve the sign-in on your phone, do that.
Your browser may then show admin.cloud.microsoft at the top: that is Microsoft's own address too.

  2. Open Domains

In the menu on the left, click Settings, then Domains under it.
No Settings in the menu? Click … Show all at the bottom of the menu first.

The Microsoft 365 admin center menu with Settings open and Domains circled
Tap the picture to see it bigger.
  3. Open your domain

You see a list under Domain name. Click your domain, here yourbusiness.com. Leave the one that ends in onmicrosoft.com alone.

Microsoft 365's Domains page with the domain yourbusiness.com circled
Tap the picture to see it bigger.
  4. Open the DNS records

Your domain's page opens. Click DNS records, next to Overview. You see your domain's settings in groups.
The groups at the top carry your Microsoft 365 email: leave them exactly as they are. Scroll down to the group called Custom records: that is where your website's settings are.
Do not click Manage DNS: you do not need it.

The domain's page at Microsoft 365 with the DNS records tab circled; the email records at the top and the Custom records group further down
Tap the picture to see it bigger.
  5. Point www at your site

Under Custom records, find the line of type CNAME named www. Click it. In Points to address, delete what is there and paste your site's address from the Domain tab of your panel. Click Save.
No www line? Click + Add record. In Type, choose CNAME (Alias). In Host name or Alias, type www. In Points to address, paste your site's address. Click Save.

Microsoft 365's Add a custom DNS record pane: Type CNAME (Alias), Host name or Alias www, your site's address in Points to address, and the Save button circled
Tap the picture to see it bigger.
  6. Change the A record

Under Custom records, find the line of type A named @. Click it. In IP Address, delete what is there and paste the A address from the table above. Click Save.
No A line named @? Click + Add record. In Type, choose A (Address). In Host name or Alias, type @. In IP Address, paste the A address from the table. Click Save.
Only one A line named @ should be left: the one with our address. If you see a second one, write to us in your panel's Help tab before you go on.

Microsoft 365's Add a custom DNS record pane: Type A (Address), Host name or Alias @, the A address in IP Address, and the Save button circled
Tap the picture to see it bigger.
  7. Add the AAAA record

Click + Add record. In Type, choose the type that starts with AAAA. In Host name or Alias, type @. In the address box, paste the AAAA address from the table above. Click Save.
Already an AAAA line named @? Click it and change its address instead.
No AAAA in the Type list? Click Cancel and tell us in your panel's Help tab: we give you one other setting that does the same job.

  8. Check it in your panel

Open the Domain tab in your panel and click Check my settings again. Each setting says done once the internet sees it, often within minutes, sometimes up to a few hours. We email you the moment your new site shows on your domain.

Good to know

Your email stays with Microsoft 365. Do not change or delete the lines of type MX, TXT or SRV, or the CNAME lines such as autodiscover: they carry your Outlook email. Change only the www, A and AAAA lines named above.

Do not change your nameservers, and do not click Manage DNS or run Microsoft's domain setup again.

No + Add record on the DNS records page? Then your domain's settings are kept at another company, which Microsoft names on that page. Ask in your panel's Help tab and we tell you where to go.

Bought your domain through Microsoft 365? It stays registered there, so keep paying for it there as before.

Not an administrator? Only a Global Administrator or a Domain Name Administrator can change these settings. Ask the person who set up Microsoft 365 for your business, or forward them this page.

Stuck, or not sure?

Open the Help tab in your panel and write what you see, in your own words. We answer within minutes and walk you through it.

Changed your mind? Your panel keeps today's settings. Put them back at Microsoft 365 and your old website returns, usually within an hour. If you turned off a forwarding or a connection on the way, turn it back on too.
