Your domain, step by step

Customer sign-in

Put your new website on your domain at Squarespace

About 15 minutes. You change three settings at Squarespace. Your domain stays where it is and your email keeps working. Your panel checks each setting for you as you make it.

You need your Squarespace sign-in. If your domain used to be at Google Domains, that is the Google account you used there. Keep your SiteSmith panel open in another tab, on the Domain tab: you copy one address from it.

The three settings

TypeNameValue
CNAMEwwwyour site's address — copy it from the Domain tab of your panel
A@137.66.50.77
AAAA@2a09:8280:1:0:0:1a0:bb93:0

@ means the domain itself; some screens call it the "host" or leave it blank. Leave every other setting exactly as it is: your email depends on them.

Step by step

  1. Sign in to Squarespace

Go to squarespace.com/login and sign in with the email and password you use for your domain. Was your domain at Google Domains before? Click Continue with Google and choose that Google account.

  2. Open your domain

At the top of the page, click Domains. In the list, click your domain name.

  3. Open the DNS settings

In the menu on the left, click DNS, then DNS Settings. You now see boxes of lines. Each line is one setting, called a record.

Tap the picture to see it bigger.
  4. Delete the Squarespace Defaults

Find the box called Squarespace Defaults. Click the red trash can at its top right, then click Delete in the window that opens. These lines sent your domain to a Squarespace website; your new site takes their place in the next steps.
Squarespace may first ask you to confirm it is you: type your password, or the code it emails you, and click Continue or Verify.
No Squarespace Defaults box? Go on to the next step.

Tap the picture to see it bigger.
  5. Delete old website lines under Custom records

Scroll down to Custom records. Look for lines whose HOST is @ or www and whose TYPE is A, AAAA, CNAME or ALIAS. They point to your old website. Move the mouse over each one, click its red trash can, and confirm. Leave every other line where it is.
No such lines? Go on to the next step.

  6. Add the www record

Click ADD RECORD. Under HOST, type www. Under TYPE, choose CNAME. Under DATA, paste your site's address from the Domain tab of your panel. Leave TTL as it is. Click SAVE.

Squarespace's Add Record form filled in with www, CNAME and the site's address, with SAVE circled
Tap the picture to see it bigger.
  7. Add the A record

Click ADD RECORD again. Under HOST, type @. Under TYPE, choose A. Under IP ADDRESS, type the A address from the table above. Click SAVE.

Tap the picture to see it bigger.
  8. Add the AAAA record

Click ADD RECORD once more. Under HOST, type @. Under TYPE, choose AAAA. Under IPV6 ADDRESS, type the AAAA address from the table above exactly as it is written there. Click SAVE.
If Squarespace says Not a valid IPv6 address, check for a missing or extra colon.

The Add Record form filled in with @, type AAAA and the AAAA address written out in full, with SAVE circled
Tap the picture to see it bigger.
  9. Check it in your panel

Your three new lines now show under Custom records. Open the Domain tab in your SiteSmith panel and click Check my settings again. Each setting says done once the internet sees it. That is often within an hour; because the old Squarespace lines were kept for 4 hours, it can take a few hours. We email you the moment your new site shows on your domain.

Good to know

Do not change anything under Domain Nameservers or DNSSEC, and leave every line of type MX or TXT and the Google Workspace or other email boxes as they are. Those carry your email.

If Squarespace says a record conflicts with an existing record or is already in use, an old line for @ or www is still there: delete it (step 5) and save again.

If your domain was forwarded to another address, Squarespace may refuse the new lines until the forwarding is gone. Click Website in the menu on the left, scroll to Domain Forwarding, and remove the rule for @ or www.

Deleting the Squarespace Defaults only takes your old Squarespace website off the domain. Your domain stays at Squarespace: keep its renewal on. Before you cancel an old Squarespace website plan, ask in your panel's Help tab, so your domain stays safe.

To go back to your old Squarespace website: delete the three new lines, click Add preset in the DNS settings and choose Squarespace defaults.

Stuck, or not sure?

Open the Help tab in your panel and write what you see, in your own words. We answer within minutes and walk you through it.

Changed your mind? Your panel keeps today's settings. Put them back at Squarespace and your old website returns, usually within an hour. If you turned off a forwarding or a connection on the way, turn it back on too.
