Put your new website on your own domain
About 10 minutes. You change three settings where your domain is kept. Your domain stays where it is and your email keeps working. Your panel checks each setting for you as you make it.
You need one thing: the sign-in for the company where your domain is kept. That is usually the company that emails you when the domain is due for renewal. Not sure who it is? Ask in your panel's Help tab and we look it up for you.
Step-by-step pictures for: Cloudflare · DreamHost · GoDaddy · Hostinger · IONOS · Namecheap · your web host (Bluehost / HostGator) · Squarespace · Wix
The three settings
| Type | Name | Value |
|---|---|---|
| CNAME | www | your site's address — copy it from the Domain tab of your panel |
| A | @ | 137.66.50.77 |
| AAAA | @ | 2a09:8280:1:0:0:1a0:bb93:0 |
@ means the domain itself; some screens call it the "host" or leave it blank. Leave every other setting exactly as it is: your email depends on them.
Step by step
Sign in where your domain is kept
Sign in to that company's website, with the same email and password you use to renew the domain.
Open your domain's settings
Find your domain in the list and open its DNS settings. Different companies call them DNS, Manage DNS, DNS Zone, Advanced DNS or Zone editor.
Change the www setting
Find the line whose name is www. Change its value to your site's address from your panel, and save. If there is no www line, add one with the type CNAME.
Change the A setting for the domain itself
Find the line of type A whose name is @ (or blank, or your domain name). Change its value to the A address in the table above, and save. If there are two or more such lines, keep one and delete the others.
Add the AAAA setting
Add a line of type AAAA, name @, with the AAAA address from the table above, and save. If an AAAA line for @ is already there, change its value instead. No place for an AAAA line at your provider at all? Then one TXT line does the same job: ask in your panel's Help tab and we tell you exactly what to type.
Check it in your panel
Open the Domain tab in your panel and click Check my settings again. Each setting says done once the internet sees it, often within minutes, sometimes up to an hour. We email you the moment your new site shows on your domain.
Good to know
Do not change your nameservers, or any line of type MX or TXT. Those carry your email.
Stuck, or not sure?
Open the Help tab in your panel and write what you see, in your own words. We answer within minutes and walk you through it.
Changed your mind? Your panel keeps today's settings. Put them back where your domain is kept and your old website returns, usually within an hour. If you turned off a forwarding or a connection on the way, turn it back on too.
